Hongrui Liu b.2000, is an artist born in Shenzhen, he grew up in Hong Kong, developing an interest in the arts at a young age and moved to London in 2016 to study and pursue a career in the arts.
He Holds a BA in Fine Art from Central Saint Martins and MA in Contemporary Art Practice from the Royal College of Art.
His latest body of work has to do with the navigation of the individual psyche and the collective identity of living in a urban environment. Considering the city, as a living organism, composed of a myriad of experiences and interactions formed by individuals, the artist reflects inwardly on his lived experience in the bustling city of london, what then appears on the canvas is a reflective mirror of the city as psychological landscape, made from layered language. The artist sees materiality of painting as a highly psychological, and introspective action, accumulating in layers of time and intensity seen through the layered pigments. What often returns, in ghostly ways is the image of his hometown, Hong Kong, a vertical metropolis surrounded by mountains and the sea, this ghostly image is constantly developed with through his current environment in the UK and imagery of european cities that he has travelled to.
Ultimately, Liu’s painting practice aims to conjure criticality with aesthetic positivity.Through the philosophicla process of introspection and by linking personal memories with collective experiences, his paintings strive to create a space where viewers can connect with their own interior landscapes. In this ongoing dialogue between self, culture, and community, Liu continues to expand the possibilities of painting as a conduit for both personal and collective memory—an art form that resonates across boundaries and speaks to the shared human condition.
